“A woman whose smile is open and whose expression is glad has a kind of beauty no matter what she wears.”
A: I am originally from Queens, New York.
Q: Who was your role model as a child and how did they influence you to become a model?
A: Honestly, my mother was my biggest influence in becoming a model. She never asked me to model and it was something that we never discussed. I’ve been a big girl all of my life, and for me, modeling was never really an option. As the daughter of a Pageant Queen, Ms. Caribbean American 1970 (New York), I grew up listening to my mother’s stories, admiring her crown and sash, portfolio, newspaper clippings and scrapbook. My grandparents brought my mother to America by way of Jamaica, and because of that she was exposed to all types of amazing opportunities. I would think to myself WOW, my mom is awesome. She was my role model as a child, and I wanted to be just like her in so many ways.
Q: How did you feel when you did your first ever fashion show or photo shoot?
A: My very first fashion show was for Tampa Bay Fashion Week back in 2010. I had worked with designer, Nina Verklas on a couture dress and she liked my look so much that she asked me to walk in her next show. I was so blown away by her invitation that I didn’t hesitate to give an answer and I agreed right away. It didn’t even occur to me just how big of a fashion show that I would be participating in until I showed up. I remember seeing the big white tent, a media wall, and a ton of press setting up. It was at that very moment when I instantly became nervous and I asked myself what did you get yourself into. I was excited and a bit intimidated all at the same time. The minute that I lined up, stepped out from behind the curtain, and began to walk the runway, I instantly felt all of my worries disappear and I just remember wanting to go out there again. To this day, I still can’t believe that that was my very first show and I think I did a really good job for someone with no formal training or experience as a model.
Q: What are your guilty pleasure foods?
A: I think that sweets are my guilty pleasure. I am a fan of fruit tarts and a warm chocolate soufflé with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, yum.
Q: What artist or choice of music is playing in the background when you are working with the glam squad to get photo shoot fresh?
A: I grew up with music embedded in my soul thanks to my father. It’s usually almost always playing in the background wherever I am. When I’m getting ready for a photo shoot or a show I tend to listen to music that helps set the tone for my mind and body. Most times its electronic dance music (EDM) because it’s upbeat, keeps me energized, and universal enough for everyone to enjoy.
Q: What beauty tips do you swear by?
A: I have very sensitive skin so I truly swear by my skincare products. Right now I’m currently hooked on Jergens Crema Hydrating Coconut Milk. I love the way it smells and how soft it makes my skin feel. At night I like to rub it on my feet and sleep with my socks on. When I wake up in the morning my feet feel refreshed, they’re extra soft, and ready for the day’s upcoming shoe adventure.
Q: Name one designer that you would love to rip the runway for?
A: My biggest challenge in answering this question is that I am a curvy girl, and I don’t have the same designer choices as a straight-sized model. The plus-sized market is unique in that there are many different body types to construct clothing for. I can’t name a particular designer that I’m extremely fond of because my clothing options are either a hit or miss. I just want to rip the runway for designers who understand how to flatter my curves in a trendy, feminine, comfortable, and respectable manner.
Q: Favorite clothing item in your closet?
A: I’m going to have to say that jeans are probably my most favorite item in my closet. They are comfortable and go with everything. You can dress them up and you can dress them down. All I have to do is add some funky, chunky, or fun accessories and I’m ready to paint the town red!
Q: Sweet potato pie or Pumpkin pie?
A: I’m a pumpkin pie girl all the way.
Q: One misconception about models that you would like to clear up?
A: People hear that you’re a model and automatically assume that you’ve got nothing else to offer the world other than your looks. I think that this is the biggest and most common misconception about models. Contrary to popular belief, most models are able to do more than just smile for the camera. We’re usually multi-talented and able to communicate with intelligent conversation. I model because it’s something that I enjoy doing, and because the fashion industry is finally beginning to slowly embrace the plus-sized/curvy woman now more than ever before.
