It’s been a minute since I’ve shared music with you. I took a trip to NYC this winter and while staying at this chic mid-Manhattan hotel, the hotel’s eatery had Khalid’s American Teen on repeat. An instant fan—I became. The fifteen track album is a laid back, melancholy and soulful listen. The now 20-year-old military brat from Georgia released his first hit, Location in 2016. American Teen is the kind of album that you keep on repeat when you’re soaking up sun at the beach, spring cleaning, feeling down, getting dressed, at the office or simply enjoying some downtime. Khalid Robinson tells a compelling story about his high school experience with pain, relationships, technology and wholesome teenage fun (which includes smoking pot and drinking booze). As weird as the story-line may seem, the album is versatile enough to attract cross-generational fans. Although the entire album is what I refer to as skip proof–here are some of my favorite tracks.
- American Teen
- Young Dumb & Broke
- Saved
- 8teen
- Let’s Go
- Cold Blooded
- Therapy
- Shot Down
- Angels
If you decide to give it a listen, I’d love to know your thoughts.
