Rick Owens: Paris Fashion Week SS 2014

I couldn’t help myself but to write a brief write-up on Rick Owens’ Paris Fashion Week SS 2014 show this week. As his models ripped the runway wearing his clean and free-flowing silhouettes, they brought an aspect of African American college Greek culture that is far from the par of the expected runway strut. It was bold. It was unorthodox. It was risky. It was captivating. The ladies from Washington Divas, Soul Steppers, The Momentums and The Zetas certainly captivated the audience in a performance none could have probably imagined. While  many are criticizing the designer for breaking away from the conventional ambiance (for a lack of better term) of high fashion—-many are elated to see diversity presented in a setting where most of us could agree lacks it. Whether Owens’ intent was to separate his show from any other or get the wheels in motion for meaningful discussion on diversity (race, height, weight) in fashion—there is no disputing the fact that it did just that. While I’m not going to go as far as saying that a movement was born, I will say that a message was sent and we got it. Loud and clear. Kudos to Rick Owens for stepping outside of the box and bringing cultural diversity to the runway, a place where many fashion insiders may be reluctant to embrace it.I’d love to hear your thoughts.

It’s such an American phenomenon. I was attracted to how gritty it was,
it was such a fuck-you to conventional beauty. They were saying, “We’re
beautiful in our own way.”
